What’s Special About Abused Women?

By Annie Kaszina Before writing this article, I stopped and thought hard. By writing this, would I be putting potentially harmful information in the hands of abusive men? Would I be putting more women at risk? The answer kept coming back no although the question did bring to mind another characteristic of abused women that Ill come back to. The thing is, although abused women arent usually aware of whats special about them, abusive men are. In fact,it would be hard to teach an abusive man anything he doesnt already know about choosing a victim. Abusive men often come across, initially, as the unusually sensitive ones. This they undoubtedly are - to their own real and perceived hurts; and also to their partners vulnerability. Whether you choose to explain it as a sixth sense, a powerful conditioned response, or something akin to pheromones, doesnt really matter. Abusive men are exquisitely attuned to pick out vulnerable, susceptible women, however these women may present themselves. Its unlikely these men could put the process into words. But they evaluate the responses of their prey very carefully. Whatever appears to be happening at the verbal level, at a deep level they are watching for the womans readiness to abdicate her own personal power. The particular type of woman theyre looking for is characterised by a fundamental defencelessness. She may not present that way. On the surface she may be attractive, competent, able to take care of herself. At bottom, to a predatory man, shes a soft touch. So what are the characteristics that set an abused woman apart? Shes a naive romantic. She believes that love, her love will conquer all. It takes her the longest time to learn that love doesnt excuse her partner from being accountable for his actions. She doesnt know when to give up and walk away. She is a natural at guilt, apologies and shouldering the blame for whatever goes wrong. She takes responsibility for anything and everything. Hence my concern that writing an article aimed at revealing the specific characteristics of abused women might benefit predatory men. She doesnt believe that she is good enough. Her low self-worth, progressively lowered in an abusive relationship, means that however imperfect her man is, she still feels inferior to him. She sees him as compensating for her own inadequacies. Her no lacks authority. In other words, she is easily bullied and put upon. She may sound strong-minded, but her wants, needs and reasons never carry the same weight for her as those of her partner. She has little or no idea of boundaries. She has little instinct for self-protection or self-preservation. Her best strategy is often to hope that others will do right by her. (This strategy causes frequent, painful disappointment.) She believes in gender stereotypes. Men are the strong, powerful ones. Women cant manage on their own. Women need a man to complete them and to manage the challenging areas of life. Shes really into rescue. A generous soul, she may well yearn for a rescuer, but she cant resist running to the rescue of anyone in distress. (This is often part of what attracts her to an abusive partner.) Shes slow to learn that the people she rescues are more likely to turn aggressive than to show gratitude and loyalty in the long term. She believes that she is entitled to far less from life than other people. Other people have rights, she only has wishes that she believes are probably unreasonable. Shes a generous, long-suffering person. Does she sound familiar? It wouldnt be surprising. Abused women make up a significant proportion of any community. And it tends to be their gentler, more feminine qualities that put them at risk. By acquiring self-awareness and learning to ring-fence their frailties with strong boundaries, they can safeguard their specialness. At the same time they can protect themselves from further abuse. Breast Enhancement Becomes Less Hazardous With A Reduction In Nicotine

By Dianne Kristie A couple of weeks before you make a trip to a specialist to receive breast enhancement surgery you surgeon may well ask you to totally refrain from smoking. It has been found that smoking makes breast surgery patients suffer more at the time of surgery and also afterwards. Nicotine levels should be heavily reduced at the very least prior to any breast modification. Firstly, if you cease smoking in advance of surgery you will become healthier. Poorer performing bodies related to people who smoke are less able to withstand the harsh conditions of surgery and later recovery. Blood circulation is slowed when someone is smoking, the inhaled nicotine entering the bloodstream via the lungs acts to vasoconstrict (i.e. reduce the diameter) the blood vessels. Surgery typically uses anesthetics that by their very nature bring the blood oxygen levels to a minimum. Vasoconstriction only acts to exacerbate this low oxygen situation. Additionally, anesthetics administered have a more predictable and therefore safe use with people who don’t smoke, so called ‘complications’ being rarer. An important part of the bodys natural healing process after surgery is the fast and efficient flow of new blood to the damaged sites. Lowered flows translate to lower blood oxygen levels and resultant slower tissue repair. Below a certain low level of oxygen delivery to the cells healing is prevented and necrosis may set in, the then dead tissue will need to be cut out. If necrotic cells are left attached to the body they typically become infected, pathogens subsequently move onto the surrounding healthy tissue. Upon the cessation of smoking your body will be able to rid its self of nicotine within only a day. Unfortunately the same is not true of other smoking related chemicals such as carbon monoxide (binds to hemoglobin in blood stronger than oxygen!) which remain for a considerably longer period of time. These other chemicals are known to reduce the body’s ability to form blood clots therefore lowering the ability of damaged areas of tissue to gain new and healthy tissue. Another effect of these deleterious chemicals is that of immune system suppression. Yet another beneficial reason to stopping smoking at least a small duration before surgery is that of lessened nicotine withdrawal. It can take around a month to see major benefits of having quitted smoking. New healthy habits such as this are reported to form in around 21 days, possibly the number of days not smoking endured by the end of the surgery! The feeling for many smokers of wanting to smoke heavily prior to surgery will not impress your surgeon. Blood and urine samples will be required of you during your pre-op surgery visit. These samples quickly and efficiently detect whether you’ve been smoking or not. Evidence of smoking may well mean the surgery is delayed. All in all the risks associated with smoking are simply not worth taking if you want to receive peace of mind, timely surgery and fast healing. Edging-Sharpening The Look

By Todd Wessel Proper edging will give a sharp finished appearance to your landscape, defining bed and turf lines, allowing your plant material to mature to its proper size without continuous pruning. Making the maintenance of your turf grass easier is another added benefit. Keep it simple. Many times Ive seen a landscape where the owner tried to add some curves to their bed lines, looking to add some interest, not realizing the amount of extra work and headaches they just created for themselves. A lawn mower that is unable to turn around the garden edges without stopping because the curves are too close together. A lawn mower that is falling off the garden edges, scalping the turf because the curves are too sharp. Unaware that combining evergreen trees into one bed, would eliminate most of the weed eating underneath. Instead we continue to mow the grass under the pines, breaking branches off and poking ourselves in the eyes. Proper edging techniques will eliminate a lot of these issues and when done properly, gives your landscape the professional edge. Follow these tips below and save yourself some time Use a long or short handled square edged shovel; edge is 6-8 wide. Finishes with a nice sharp square edge. Edges should be about 3 deep before mulching. Lay a dollar bill on its side, when the top side of bill reaches the top of edge, you are good Edging motion: shovel in hand, right hand over left or viceversa shovel straight up straight, arms go straight up and down driving the shovel into the ground. Lean shovel back away from bed and pry soil into bed. Straighten any miss fires with short chopping strokes. Edge and throw all the debris into the garden before you prep with the tiller, and all the debris will get broken up by the tines. Clean out any grass clumps before you till. Sometimes, I have some areas in my garden or yard that need a little soil to fill a hole. I keep my wheel barrow close as I edge, fill with material and deposit around the garden where needed. Lay out your edging lines with string or garden hose until you get good enough to draw them without any help. You will get the eye and the feel after you practice for a while. Always use spray paint to draw the lines before you edge, its easier to follow. Edging tree rings For perfect tree rings, tie a string to the trunk of your trees, extend the proper distance for the size of the tree, walk around with the string and paint the perfect circle. Make sure your tree rings fit the size of your trees. If you have a tree that’s trunk is 24″ wide, don’t put a mulch ring around that tree that is 2′ around. Make sure the mulch ring is in scale with the size of the tree. Big trees, big rings or no ring at all. With big trees, it is ok to spray roundup around the base about 4-6 and kill the grass there only, then you dont have to worry about weed eating and damaging the bark. Little trees, little rings Always have round corners on your beds, never square. Square corners are hard to maintain. Putting curves in your garden Eventually, you will have to put some curves in your edging and when you do, make them loooooonnnng and sloooooooow. You should be able to effortlessly walk your mower around your bed edges and not fall into the garden or leave a lot of weed eating. To get a feel for these curves, take a piece of string about 15 feet long and stretch it out in a straight line on the grass. Now take another piece of string, about 25 feet long, place one end on the end of one of the pieces on the ground. Slowly curve the 25 foot string out and up to the right. Continue to slowly stretch your curve out and up, hitting the top of your curve at the 7.5 feet or half way mark of the string on the ground. The top of the curve will be about 5 feet or more on the grass above the original string. Continue to curve the string back down to the other end of the string on the ground and finish at the 15 foot mark. This will give you an idea of how a long slow curve is done. Never use a bunch of quick curves, it will drive your eye crazy and make your mowing a nightmare. Say it again, looooooong and sloooooooow curves. More edging tips When you have long straight lines in your landscape take the time and make the line as straight as possible. Long edges are very difficult to keep straight. The edge will look awesome and you will impress any landscaper that drives by. Always wrap your bed edges from the front of a building around the corner to the side. Including the front and part of the side, gives a better finished look to the planting and brings the corner of the building down making it look shorter. Pull the edges from under the evergreens out to one foot past where the branches stop now. This will allow you to mow around without breaking branches, poking yourself in the eye and will allow the plant continue to grow. Re-edge every 2- 3 years when the branches once again grow past the edge. Always end your edges, whether into a sidewalk, building or any object, in a straight line. It will make your maintenance a lot easier. Edging is a great way to set your landscape apart from 99% of your competition. When you have sharp edges that set your garden and your lawn areas apart, people will see you as a professional. Market On Myspace By “Becoming Friends” With Your Customers

By George Levy As someone who has spent over ten years marketing on the Internet, Ive seen wave after wave of the latest thing in Internet marketing as advertisers try to find the most effective way to capture new customers online. The latest version of this online hunt for new clients is the rapid proliferation of online social networking sites such as MySpace, Facebook and Friendster. With over 130 million people worldwide using MySpace and with a monthly page view count that surpassed Yahoo in November to claim the #1 position on the Internet in terms of Page Views, MySpace.com has established itself as the leader in this most recent latest thing and is becoming more and more a coveted advertising hot spot to reach new customers. Still, online social networking sites present an interesting marketing challenge and MySpace.com is no exception… For starters, the users on these sites are typically not very responsive to traditional banner advertising - as their main interest in visiting these sites is not to purchase anything, but instead, to meet others and establish various different types of relationships. Add to this, the fact that these users tend to be more stimulation-hungry, choosing video, flash and audio over simple graphics. In addition, they also tend to base their purchasing decisions more on word of mouth recommendations than on paid advertisement. Although at first this would seem like an obstacle for advertisers, this same behavior presents a great marketing opportunity for smart marketers who take advantage of it and tailor their message and its delivery. Users on MySpace are used to receiving communications from their friends on a regular basis. They are prone to developing cliques and groups which they belong to and where they gather and share thoughts and opinions. This presents the perfect opportunity to establish a longer term, deeper relationship with a brands loyal following and in the process, make friends out of what traditionally would have been merely potential customers or prospects. While more and more of corporate America is investing in high cost, highly customized featured profiles on MySpace (complete with interactive games, surveys and discussion boards,) many of the same results can be achieved using the free profile and tools that MySpace provides. Customizing your profile (commonly called in MySpace as pimping your profile) to be consistent with your brand look and feel allows your profile visitors to step into your brand and help differentiate you from all other profiles on the site. Beyond customizing your profile to fit your brand, MySpace blogs, groups and videos can be an excellent way of getting your marketing message out and receive immediate feedback from your users, while the message and bulletin features allow you to send messages to your friends instantly and for free. Other details that can go a long way to helping your audience spread the message and enlist new potential customers for you include: providing your profile visitors with the codes and the tools (such as videos, scripts and pre-written messages) that they can forward to their friends as well as creating banners and HTML comments that they can copy and paste on other sites and/or profiles. In conclusion, the trick to an effective marketing campaign using MySpace and other online social networking sites is treating your potential or existing customers as your friends by establishing a friendship-like relationship with them. This includes having a consistent message across all the channels available and establishing a longer term, two-way relationship with your customers, while allowing your new friends an opportunity to share with each other and spread your marketing message for you. Don’t Lose Hope - Hold The Rope of Poor Credit Secured Loan

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Natasha_Anderson]Natasha Anderson If you are a bad credit scorer, dont lose hope because your property will not let you down. Your asset can be of great help during your financial crisis. Owing a property is considered as a positive score in applying for a loan. It is absolutely true that previously the person had to face many hurdles in getting a loan if he was a bad credit scorer. But now everyone whether a bad credit scorer or the good credit scorer can apply for a loan. The only difference can be that the bad credit scorer has to pay slightly higher rate of interest than that of the person with good credit score on poor credit secured loan. This difference is generally identifiable when we compare them but if we consider the interest rate for bad credit scorer then it is same as other cost. Poor credit secured loan as other secured loan is secured against the amount. But this loan is especially targeted to the people with poor credit history who have no other option left rather than going for such bad credit loans. These poor credit secured loans not only assist the person in their financial crisis but also help them to improve their credit rating. The person must be careful in choosing the lender. The person is also recommended to take professional advice from any expert or the credit counselor before reaching the decision. Sometimes the lender may mislead you by offering certain gifts, incentives or even by lower rate of interest. But the person should make choice wisely that by considering the whole cost of the loan. He must see that the loan must be cheap throughout the life of the loan rather than cheap in the beginning. The person should not forget that research is the best way of getting the cheap loan deal. Rceiving loan quotes from the lender enable the person to compare them on the grounds of rate and cost. Thus, the borrower is left with the cheapest and flexible loan deal. Online method makes the task of researching, easier and convenient. Because researching in the physical market is very baffling and time consuming, this sometimes even makes the person frustrated. Through online method, he can access at his convenience. Only the person wants is a personal computer and internet. Cost is also a reason why the people prefer online method. Student Loans and Finances - Life as a Cash Strapped Student

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Mike_Avro]Mike Avro It can be the best time of your life, or the worst depending on how you approach what life deals you as a university student. For most of us heading off to college or university is the first time we’ve ever been away from home for any long period of time. It is also one of the first times we are pretty much completely responsible for our finances. It is a sad but true fact that for most university students, money is just as important (or more important) than good grades. Because of the high tuition rates and the incredible costs of text books many students life on and below the poverty line. In many cases it is hard to manage a decent paying job and course load and so you have to sacrifice one or the other. Work for less at a job that matches your class schedule or reduce your class load to get a better job. Neither is really ideal. The biggest challenge is making sure that you have enough to cover the essentials each month - rent, food, bills, beer/coolers. This means you need to plan things out a little ahead of time and be smart about how and why you spend your money. However there always are times when the money is especially tight or simply not enough. In these cases there are a few things you can do. 1) apply for one of the many student credit card offers you will find on any campus - READ THE DETAILS CAREFULLY 2) apply for a bank line of credit or personal loan to help cover your needs 3) look into scholarships and bursaries available through your school - there are MANY that go unclaimed yearly, and they are often based on need, not academic scores 4) short term loans from family Going through the fun and pain of university can be interesting enough without having to add on huge money stresses. As a student you will have financial troubles, there is almost no doubt about that. However, how you manage your money on a day-to-day basis will ultimately determine how you deal with financial troubles when they show up. Just keep a cool head, use your campus resources to get unbiased advice and help if you need it. Guest Checks: How to Use Them

By Jim MacKay Essentially the job of a waitress is to take customers orders, forward them to the kitchen and deliver the meal to the customers table. This might not sound like a difficult task but it can become extremely difficult if a waitress has fifteen tables to serve. Imagine taking orders for fifteen tables by memory. Unless the waitress has an extraordinary memory I dare say this could not be done. This is where guest checks come in. Guest checks are the one tool keeping a waitress organized. When visiting a table of five or six people even, it can be hard trying to remember which guest has which drink much less who wanted onions on their burger and who did not. Guest checks are a must have for a waitress. These pads are detailed usually a place for the table number, quantity of items or any way the business decides to have them designed. Listed on the guest check would be the meal choice, any particular instructions such as onions or no onions and a drink order, maybe even dessert. If one person is paying at the table, the entire order would be placed on the one order form. If all five people were paying individually the waitress would use five sheets from the guest check. This is done for the benefit of the customer as well as the waitress. If the waitress were to run to the kitchen shouting five different orders at the kitchen staff, there would be mass confusion. How would the cooks be able to memorize who had what, which meals belonged together, much less the small details like mustard or no mustard. The kitchen is obviously the most important part of a restaurant. People come to eat and they expect to get what they order and pay for. Guest checks cut out this confusion because the orders are written with specifics for each customer or table. Guest checks are imperative to the smooth operation of any restaurant. As long as the waitress is able to write and the kitchen staff can read the writing, orders should not be mixed up and the customer should be happy. A place for the table number is an excellent idea when ordering guest checks. In a large restaurant where a waitress is responsible of many tables, knowing the table number would ensure that Mr. White dont end up with Mr. Browns prime rib. Making sure the orders are delivered to the correct guest is the duty of the waitress. Making sure the guest is billed for the correct meal is also the duty of the waitress. Guest checks will insure both of these duties are performed properly thus making the customer happy and guaranteeing returned business. See what high quality guest checks can do for your restaurant’s image at http://www.paperism.com. Can You Lose Weight Without Starving?

By Dan Curtis Researchers at Pennsylvania State University are providing some key clues to help you to permanent weight loss. They are looking at the effect of the kind of food you eat, and how it affects your ability to lose weight. (The influence of food portion size and energy density on energy intake: implications for weight management. Am J Clin Nutr. 2005 Jul;82(1 Suppl):236S-241S.) One thing they have shown is that people tend eat food based on how big the portions are. In other words, they found that no matter what the food was, the people ate the same quantity. It didnt matter if it was something light or something heavyif they were used to eating a full plate of food, they ate a full plate of food and didnt stop until it was gone. The problem with this is that some foods are very dense. They have a great deal of calories in each cupful. So if you tend to eat dense foods you will take in more calories. Even a small number of extra calories each meal will make a tremendous difference over time. When you eat one of these very dense foods, like fatty meats and rich sauces for instance, you are not generally satisfied with a small amount. Your body may only need 500-600 calories for each meal (which is about normal for 3 meals per day in a lean, healthy adult.) But a meal of meat and gravy with a small amount of vegetables will probably not seem like a meal to you. You might get a chicken leg and a small salad. It is not very likely that you are going to be satisfied with that. You might have to double the portion to feel satisfied. But a meal with less dense foods, like grains, soups, and more vegetables, will be a lot of food. There are not too many calories in a bowl of soup and a heap of lettuce, and add some beans and rice and you will have plenty of food. Even with some lean meat you will still get more to eat. So when you add in the less calorie dense foods, which are mainly foods like fruits, vegetables, grains, and rice, you get a lot more to eat, plain and simple. And it is always easier to stick with your weight loss efforts if you are getting enough to eat. Are You Tired Of Being Fat? Relationship Advice: How To Recover From An Affair

By Steve Roberts We never think that our relationship will experience the tragedy of an affair. No one ever expects it, but it happens to so many nonetheless. Often, both partners want to put the relationship back together again. Here’s the blueprint for recovery. The First Thing To Do Is To Go To A Couple’s Therapist. Yes, I am biased about this since I am a couple’s therapist. But I’ve seen so many people come to me years after an affair and the wounds are still raw. The couple once thought they had put the affair behind them, but they really had not. Either the betrayed partner never really got over it, or the person who had the affair never really let go of the passion, attraction or dreams evoked by the affair. So, do it right. Get some help. You’re too close to the problem to see it clearly. For The Person Who Feels Betrayed: Your reactions may range from wanting to get the person back at your side at any cost, to kicking him or her out at the least provocation. And, you may cycle from one to the other throughout the recovery process. You can figure on at least a year to really get over most of it. It is a grief process. You’ve had dreams crushed and trust shattered. It will take a long time. You need a resource network besides your partner. That means friends, family, minister, counselor. Grief is sadness, and often depression and anger mixed in. You need to hear repeatedly that your partner is sorry and really means it. Your biggest problem is that your partner is going to believe that the two of you should just put it all behind you and get on with life. He or she will think that what happened really didn’t matter that much, that relationship with you is what really matters, and now it is recognized. Your partner will want to just move on. You are not going to be able to do that. That’s why you’re going to need the help of that therapist. For The Person Who Had The Affair: You may think you know what your partner is going through, but you don’t. You will typically get over the affair fairly quickly and expect your partner to do the same. It doesn’t work this way. If you’re going to be successful you’re going to have to learn to say “I’m sorry” on a daily basis, ad nauseum, for at least a year. It will be very trying for you because you just won’t get it. You won’t get how wounded your partner is, and how long the recovery is going to take. You won’t want to take full responsibility for how much harm you’ve created. You’re going to feel like it is all about beating up on and blaming you. But you’re going to have to learn to live with it all. It is called the consequences of your behavior. None of us like this very much. It is difficult. But it is the real deal. To be successful in this recovery you’re going to have to shoulder the responsibility and really become a “big” person. What a challenge you face! Trust: Trust is merely my ability to predict your future behavior based on my observation of your past behavior. After an affair, trust has been ruined. Everything is brought into question. The partner who strayed needs to have the willingness to have all behavior now be totally transparent. The only way to re-establish trust is to build up another large resevoir of past behavior that is trustworthy. The person who strayed always believes that trust should be re-established much more quickly than is actually possible. The Outcome: Many couples successfully overcome an affair and use it as a challenge for deeper growth together. Many do not. Many couples embrace the pain and mature as human beings. Many do not. Many couples have two partners willing to put in the grit, perseverence and love necessary to make it work. Many have only one person willing to do so. Successful recovery from an affair can be the hardest thing you will ever do in your lifetime. Are you up to it? 9 Necessary Steps You Should Take When You Hire Your First Salesperson

By Todd C Taylor As a small business owner, at some point in time, you will most likely decide to hire your first salesperson. This process can be exciting and rewarding but only when the proper planning is completed. It is important to keep in mind the old saying; proper planning prevents poor performance. This new sales department needs a plan for performance. Listed is a performance process you want to have predetermined and in place before you hire your new superstar. 1. Hire a recruiter first.
